Gestamp Bizkaia, a member of the Gestamp Group, a leader in the design, development and manufacture of metal assemblies for the automotive industry, will stamp the pieces and produce the moving parts of the new van that Mercedes Benz plans to launch in spring 2014, to be manufactured at its plant in Vitoria-Gasteiz.

To cope with this great industrial challenge, the Gestamp Group expects to invest 60 M € between 2012 and 2017; most of the investment has already been made to adapt Gestamp Bizkaia's plant, installing new manufacturing facilities and advanced management and configuration systems.

The VS20 project –the technical name of the new Mercedes-Benz van project– will run for 10 years from 2014, launch date of the project, until 2023. An estimated 125,000 vehicles will be built. This project replaces the one for supplying metal components for the Mercedes Vito and Viano vans, which was also led from the Bizkaia plant.

Gestamp and the German Daimler group have a solid relationship that results in ongoing projects in Argentina, China, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Mexico, Portugal and the United States. In 2012, the Daimler Group accounted for 9% of Gestamp's global turnover.

The commemoration of Gestamp Bizkaia's 25th anniversary, which was held at the premises of the Abadiño plant (Bizkaia), was attended by the Basque President Iñigo Urkullu, the General Councilor of Bizkaia, José Luis Bilbao, the Councilor for Economic Development and Competitiveness of the Basque Government, Arantza Tapia, and the Mayor of Abadiño José Luis Navarro, among other authorities.

Gestamp Bizkaia is the benchmark for stamping in the automotive sector in the Basque Country and supplies metal components for brands such as Mercedes Benz and Volkswagen, among others.

Gestamp Group Chairman, Francisco J. Riberas Mera, said during the memorial event, "Between 2012 and 2013, our Group has invested more than € 1.2 bn worldwide. Gestamp Bizkaia was the origin of our industrial group, but today the new plants outside of Spain are those that are allowing us to continue to invest in Bizkaia to keep on "manufacturing the future". Thus, a circle that began 25 years ago on this shop floor is closed".
